Design, beyond the screen

I have designed and built a range of bespoke furniture across commercial, educational, and personal contexts. This work focuses on functional, well-crafted furniture pieces, typically produced as one-off or small-batch designs.

Examples include a boardroom table for the MRP Foundation, a office table for Asset Tree, a lectern for an organisation, custom coffee side tables, and barbershop furniture, including a coffee table and shelving designed specifically for the interior environment.

Asset Tree

Asset Tree is a South African financial services and advisory company based in Durban. The firm focuses on wealth management, financial planning, and investment advisory services, working with individuals and businesses to manage and grow assets over the long term.

Custom office table

I was commissioned to design and build a bespoke office table for Asset Tree’s Durban office. The brief required the piece to align with an interior defined by dark timber and black steel, while introducing an Afro-inspired, masculine character.

The design integrates the Asset Tree symbol as a carved timber feature, making the brand part of the furniture. Material choices and proportions were kept angular and robust, balancing functionality with a strong physical presence suited to a formal office environment.

DCC Lectern

I was commissioned to design a bespoke lectern fabricated from chrome-plated metal, featuring an angular form and an integrated illuminated front element intended to symbolise truth.

The design was developed to echo the interior architecture of the building, which featured large, bent chrome structural elements within the ceiling.

Nev the Barber

Nev the Barber is an independent barbershop based in Durban, South Africa. It operates as a standalone grooming studio offering men’s haircutting and barbering services.

I was commissioned by Nev the Barber to design a bespoke coffee table for the store interior.

The table was constructed entirely from layered plywood, using a single repeated form stacked and shaped to create the final piece. The approach was intentionally material-led, exposing the layered texture of the plywood as the primary visual feature.

The working class - office table

A custom-designed office table for my private collection.

The table is constructed from powder-coated white steel square tubing with a plywood top, and was designed as a flat-pack piece, able to be fully disassembled for transport and reassembly.

Dining room table: personal collection

I designed and built a custom dining table featuring a circular metal inlay set into the centre of the wooden pine tabletop, allowing hot pots and serving dishes to be placed directly on the surface without additional protection.

The table is supported by a steel sub-frame beneath the timber top, engineered with socketed connections that allow the legs to be removed for easy transport and reassembly. This approach balanced structural rigidity with practical portability.

Side table and table lamp: personal collection

Side table and table lamp designed as a paired object set, constructed from solid timber and bent, powder-coated steel. Both pieces are based on a consistent 23.5-degree angled geometry, used as a governing rule across form, stance, and visual balance.

The angle references the Earth’s axial tilt (23.5°), a proportion often associated with natural equilibrium and seasonal rhythm. This constraint was used to introduce a sense of tension and direction while maintaining stability and coherence across the two objects. The lamp extends the same structural and material logic as the table, translating it into a functional lighting form.
